TAN TALK WITH LOZ CURTIS

BB’s super stylist Chloe recently caught up with beauty vlogger and tanning guru Loz Curtis to talk about our favourite tanning brand; Loving Tan! Find out some of her top tips so that you too, can have the much sought after year-round Summer glow!

What is your favourite Loving Tan product and why?

My favourite would have to be the Deluxe Bronzing Mousse in Ultra Dark because it gives such a deep natural brown colour in one easy application. I prefer a mousse because they are quick drying and easy to use. It’s also handy to get even coverage when they have a colour guide like Loving Tan mousses to make sure you don’t miss any spots!

How do you prep your skin for your tan?

I use the Loving Tan Tan Removing and Skin Polishing glove to remove any dead skin, I find it’s best to do this at the end of your shower when your skin is most hydrated – you will literally see the dead skin cells scrub off!

Do you use a different product for your face and your body, or the same one?

Sometimes I tan my face, but when I do, I use a light layer of moisturiser first to prevent overdevelopment, but I generally like to have a darker shade of foundation & bronzers to match up my tan!

What do you look for in a tan?

The deepest, darkest natural looking brown colour I can get!

What are your tips for getting the right shade?

It’s really a matter of trial and error – if you’re really pale I would suggest starting with a medium to dark shade and once you become confident with that work your way up to the dark to ultra dark shades

What are your tips for making sure your tan looks natural and not orange?

Finding the holy grail tanner… Loving Tan mousses are olive based and contain DHA & erythrulose which is an active ingredient that eliminates any orange tones, whereas most other leading brands only have DHA.

Do you use different tans for summer and winter? If yes, why?

No, but in Winter you do need to ensure you exfoliate your skin properly before tanning.

So whether you are as obsessed with tanning as we are, or you are yet to try going faux; check out our great selection of Loving Tan for everything you need for the perfect shade of bronze! Now you can fool your friends into thinking you have just gotten back from a holiday in the Bahamas!

BOOK REVIEW: #GIRLBOSS

$
0
0

What is a #GIRLBOSS? A week ago I’d have pictured a sassy woman with big hair, big style and a big attitude who snaps her fingers in a 'Z' formation. Beyoncé, basically. Sophia Amoruso’s bestseller #GIRLBOSS changed all that. Don’t know who Sophia is? Does Nasty Gal ring a bell? Yep, she’s the Founder and CEO. She’s a social media queen and leader of an empire that began in her bedroom. So if you want to get a unconventional insight into ruling your world then take notice to what #GIRLBOSS has to say.

#GIRLBOSS is Sophia’s unconventional road to success… not that Sophia is the conventional type of person. Once upon a time she was dumpster diving for free food and gave up shaving her legs. She had a string of sh*tty jobs (although later, they saved her life), shop lifted, hitchhiked and dressed like she was from the 70s. Then one day she got a hernia and needed to pay for the operation. Hello, Nasty Gal was born on eBay.

This isn’t a step-by-step guide on building an empire – it’s advice from someone who’s been there, done that. It’s got unique insights into the fashion and business worlds. Sophia’s gonna dish out some harsh truths – like money looks better in the bank then on your feet (put down the sale shoes!), and what not to do at a job interview - but she’s totally going to endorse you doing things exactly your way. You’ll find other stories and advice from other successful #GIRLBOSS’s too. Girl power, amiright?

#GIRLBOSS is funny and exciting and smart. #GIRLBOSS is like the friend who convinces you not to spend $$$ on pants you’re only buying because you saw them in Vogue. #GIRLBOSS is part lifestyle of the rich and famous, part cringe-worthy Puberty Blues. That’s exactly what a #GIRLBOSS is – a journey to creating your own success. And that’s exactly what you can be.

Who runs your world? You. So be the best at it.

$

Three thirtyitis is a serious issue in our office, one that we usually try to ignore or overcome with a healthy option. But for those days when you just need something sweet in the afternoon we may just have the perfect treat. Did we mention it's made with the best ingredient ever... NUTELLA!

Our Graphic Designer Rachel shows us that you can do more with Nutella than eat it directly out of the jar with a spoon (we're all guilty!)

This delicious afternoon treat had everyone in the office begging for the recipe, so we thought we would share with you all. We can all make it, eat it, regret it, then eat some more!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

- Puff pastry sheet
- Nutella
- Strawberries

STEP 1.

Preheat oven to 220 degrees C

STEP 2.

Cut a puff pastry sheet into 4 squares

STEP 3.

Diagonally slice the edges of the pastry piece to approximately 1/3 of the way in (as you will need to "braid" the pasty piece)

STEP 4

Put 1 tablespoon of Nutella and chopped strawberry pieces down the middle of the puff pastry square

STEP 5

Fold up the diagonal slices inwards one by one until each strip of the pastry is folded in.

STEP 6

Cook in oven for about 10 minutes or until pastry is brown on top

TIP.

Add chopped banana with or instead of strawberries

RECIPE: RAW VEGAN COOKIE DOUGH BALLS

We love when someone in the office decides to make afternoon treats... and even better when they are guilt free! Our photo editor Rachel made these amazing Raw Vegan Cookie Dough Balls and even made Raw Vegan Chocolate bites to go in them or eat on their own!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

For cookie dough mixture

- 3/4 cup cashew nuts
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 teaspoon pink himalayan salt
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

For chocolate

- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 3/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 cup raw cacao powder
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

STEP 1.

Combine all chocolate ingredients into a food processor until combined

STEP 2.

Spoon out tiny amount onto a plate to make choc chips and freeze whilst you make the cookie dough balls

*The chocolate will melt through once added to the dough. If you want your choc chips to stay hard, freeze for 3+ hours. We did this with out left over chocolate and froze them in shaped ice cube trays

STEP 3.

For the cookie dough, combine cashews, oats, salt and cinnamon in a food processor until all combined. Do not over mix otherwise the mixture will turn into a butter

STEP 4.

Add vanilla extract and maple syrup to your mixture and combine again

STEP 5.

Scoop out the mixture into balls and place them on a plate ready to serve with your chocolate bites or freeze for later.

ENJOY!

Strawberry Ghosts and Pretzel Screams

You need:
Sandwich bag
Baking paper
Strawberries
Pretzels

White Chocolate:
1 1/2 cups Raw Cocoa Butter, grated or finely chopped
¾ cup refined coconut oil
½ cup coconut sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate:
1/2 cup coconut oil
3/4 cup maple syrup
1 cup raw cacao powder
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Combine the white chocolate ingredients into a food processer and blend until smooth. Put into a bowl, and do the same for the chocolate ingredients.
2. Use you white chocolate to create “eyes” for your pretzels by dolloping the chocolate on baking paper in circular shapes about the size of a 5 cent piece. Place in the fridge.

3. Whilst the eyes are in the fridge, use the remainder of your white chocolate to dip the strawberries in, making the strawberry ghost bodies. Lay them on a plate lined with baking paper. Refrigerate once finished.

4. Dip the pretzels into the dark chocolate, completely covering them. Lay them on a plate lined with baking paper. Take the eyes out of the fridge and place two on each pretzel, and then freeze.

5. Take the sandwich bag and cut a small piece of the corner off to create a piping bag. Using the rest of the dark chocolate, dollop little eyes and faces on your ghosts and pretzels. Put them in the freezer to set.

Healthy ‘Ferrero Rocher’ Fudge Cakes

$

These cakes are a nutritious option that satisfy any sweet craving! The use of hazelnut in combination with cacao imitates the heavenly experience of a Ferrero Rocher. What I love most about these is that they are delicious, guilt-free and jam-packed with nutrients. No need for deprivation!

Preparation time: 15-20 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes

Serves: 15

Cupcakes:

  • ¼ cup buckwheat flour
  • ½ cup hazelnut or almond meal
  • ¼ cup hazelnut butter (I use Mayver’s hazelnut cacao spread but any nut butter will work)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup cacao (or good quality cocoa powder)
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup (or honey, coconut nectar, brown rice syrup)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp boiling water

Preheat the oven to 150 degrees (fan-forced). Place all dry ingredients in a bowl and stir until combined. Make a well in the centre and pour in all wet ingredients. Whisk. Place the mixture into a greased mini cupcake pan. Bake for approximately 10 minutes (so they are still a slightly fudgy consistency!) Allow to cool.

Frosting:

  • 1 avocado
  • 2 ½ tbsp pure maple syrup (or more to taste)
  • ½ - 2/3 cup of cacao (depending our how chocolatey you like it!)
  • 3 tbsp Mayver’s hazelnut cacao spread (or other nut butter)

Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor on a low speed until creamy and well-combined. Place in a piping bag and pipe onto the cooled fudge cakes.

Delicious!

Hope you all enjoy this goodness-filled recipe.
Lots of love, Sophie xx

DIY NAILS: COLOUR BLOCKING

$
0
0

Getting a bit bored of your current mani? Here at BBHQ we thought we would mix things up and show you how to create your very own colour blocked manicure- no fancy equipment required!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

1. A minimum of 3 shades of nail polish.
We went with our favourite Kester Black nail polishes in the delicious shades of Deep Violet, Cerulean and Bougainvillea.
2. Clear top coat
3. Sticky Tape or Scotch Tape
4. Nail polish remover
5. Cotton buds

BEFORE YOU START:

It is important to start any mani make-over with clean and smooth nails. So if yours are not up to scratch (excuse the pun) we recommend giving them a quick file and buff.

STEP 1:

Using a light colour of your choice, give your nails a quick base coat. We used Bougainvillea by Kester Black. Apply a second coat if required and allow your base coat to fully dry before continuing on to step number two.

Tip: Due to the layered design of this manicure you need to allow a LOT of time for each layer to dry fully before the second coat. So why not invite your besties around, and watch your favourite chick flick whilst you are all waiting for the paint to dry!

STEP 2:

With a general plan of how you would like your design to look, start applying the sticky tape in various diagonal arrangements across your fingernails working on only one hand at the time. Smooth the tape onto your nail to remove air bubbles.

TIP: Remember the part of the nail you cover will remain the base coat colour.

STEP 3:

Carefully apply your second colour of choice to the sections not covered by the sticky tape.Take extra care to apply the polish right to the edges of the nail, it is ok if you paint over the tape.

Continue painting all your nails.

☆ WAIT FOR POLISH TO DRY ☆

STEP 4:

Depending on your design arrangement and the affect you would like to achieve you can either remove the sticky tape and then add another layer in a new direction or you can apply the sticky tape in a second layer over the top of the existing tape.

Note: You can try and paint each nail the same (difficulty rating: high) or make it random like we did (difficulty rating: easy)! You can also mix it up and add as many layers as you like giving you the option to create a simple or busy design!

STEP 5:

Paint your final colour in the un-taped sections.

STEP 6:

Carefully and slowly remove the sticky tape to reveal your design.

Note: Some tapes will leave a sticky residue that you can try and remove with soapy water once the polish is dry.

TO FINISH:

Clean up your finger tips by using nail polish remover & the cotton buds. Then finish your nails by applying a clear top coat, this will help create a smooth and shiny finish.

Now go and show off your new fancy digits!!!

Gingerbread Pancakes with Chocolate Sauce

Preparation time: 5 minutesCooking time: 10 minutesServes: 1.

It’s December- yes, bring on the Christmas treats! However, for many looms the reality that it also happens to be summer over here.... a.k.a bikini season.
Well here’s the fact: with my recipes, you can have your (pan)cake and eat it too!
These gingerbread pancakes are full of nutrition and insanely delish- I promise! I often double, triple or quadruple the recipe if cooking for more people.

Pancakes:

  • ¼ cup buckwheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ banana, mashed
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 1 tsp natural vanilla extract
  • 2 – 4 tbsp coconut water or milk
  • 1 tsp sweetener of choice (honey/ pure maple/ coconut nectar)
  •  ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 heaped tsp ground ginger
1.   Combine dry ingredients in a small mixing bowl.
2.   Place all wet ingredients together and whisk.
3.   Fold into dry ingredients.
4.   Let the mixture sit for just a few minutes! (I find this helps it to thicken! Leave this step out if you’re in a rush.)
5.   Melt half a teaspoon of coconut oil in a frypan on medium heat, placing about ¼ cup of mixture on the pan each time in a circular shape. I don’t spread mine out too much as it allows them to become fluffy and thick! Leave it for a minute or 2 or until small bubbles form, then flip!

Note: if you don’t like banana, feel free to leave out! Just add less liquid!

Chocolate Sauce:
  • 1 heaped tsp raw cacao (depending on how chocolatey you would like it!)
  • Dash hot water
  • 1 tsp nut butter or tahini
  •  1 tsp sweetener of choice

1.     To make the sauce, simply combine the above ingredients until it has reached a consistency that is slightly thick, but still runny.

2.     Pour the sauce over pancakes! Top with fresh berries, activated nuts, banana, cacao nibs or whatever you desire!
